For example, having no car, Learner Jony’s mom, Imelda, had no easy way of taking Jony to preschool, but still wanted him to start learning. After noticing that Jony was an extremely quiet kid, Dr.Thadani from the Ravenswood Family Health Center referred Imelda to 10 Books A Home. The home one-on-one tutoring was the perfect solution for Imelda’s son to start talking and learning.
During my visits, I asked Imelda and two other 10BH moms how the program has impacted their child. Their answers were so amazing, I don't even need to say anything else. So, without further ado, let me introduce you to Imelda, Monica, and Ida.
[10 Books a Home] has been an excellent program for Jony because he is learning so much so quickly and I hear him talking more--especially in English. I learned new things about Jony like the fact he is persistent about doing things right--like tracing his letters well and actually cares about what his work looks like. I’ve also noticed that he gets excited about learning and finds pride in his work. I’ve been discovering things I didn’t know he could do and I’m finding out about more things he likes. I would tell other parents that this program does work because you can see the difference in your child.
Before [my son] didn’t know how to count, and since [his Role Model] Lisa started coming here with him, he’s started to count, and we didn’t expect him to be able to count. He’s almost counting to ten, now. He likes to read. Everyday Lisa reads with him and he just wants to continue reading everything Lisa reads with him. Before he didn’t pay attention, he would say, “I don’t care about it.” But now, when Lisa comes he gets very excited and he starts getting his books, getting ready, and he’s always looking at the calendar to see when she’s coming. Lisa has done a lot of activities with him that I never would have thought of. I like all the activities that she does with him, because sometimes, I have four kids and sometimes I just don’t have time. She gives me a lot of ideas to help him, like with his speech.
This is like oxygen to my children, to my family. I would tell parents that this is the best thing that they can give their children other than a nice, healthy environment. I can’t explain how my children have started to develop words they didn’t know before; I can’t explain how they no longer desire the television, they choose books and magazines over DVDs...This is one of the best things a parent can do for their child. Even though 10BH explains the details of everything, it really doesn’t hit home until that mentor is in that house, working with that child, and when that mentor leaves, that child is running around the house looking for a book! That is when it hits home that 10 Books A Home makes a difference. And that’s the most important thing to me as a parent. It made a difference in my life and in my children’s lives.
