Paul Thiebaut III, the CEO of 10BH, was the last one to present. His presentation was the one that won me over. 10BH was the only one that has Role Models go to the Learner's home to preform learning activities with the child and their parent.
I was not too sure if I wanted to join this organization because it was very different from the rest. In all of the other organizations you work onsite with a child, but at 10BH you teach the child in their home. I signed up for an interview despite my concerns and after the interview went really well, I went for training.
After training I started working with my Learner, Gonzalo. The first time I went over to his house I was nervous to meet him and his family, and when I got inside he was crying his eyes out. I did not let his crying discourage me because I knew he was nervous just as much as I was. Throughout the first lesson I tried to get him to open up by showing him the books I had for him.
At first, he did not want to even look at me. I then showed him a Mickey Mouse book with buttons that play music. Once he saw the book he started flipping through the pages and pressing the buttons repeatedly. I then showed him all the materials and 10 books I brought for him to keep. But, Gonzalo did not speak to me or look at me much throughout the first lesson.
The next week I came over, though, he was actually excited to see me (yet still shy). Every week I come over he seems happier and happier to see me. He now speaks to me and even repeats after me when I teach him new vocabulary words.
Being a Role Model requires a six month commitment, however as of last week, his mother asked me if I can teach him for the two years he will be enrolled.
Even though it has only been two months since I started, Gonzalo and I have learned an immense amount. I get to know his academic abilities and I get to know him personally. I work at his pace and I get to know what he needs to focus on more. In a short period of time I have helped Gonzalo improve his writing abilities and be able to distinguish letters more often. I cannot wait for what the future holds when his academic journey begins in kindergarten.
10BH is an organization that is life changing, not only for the Learner but also for the Role Model. There is no greater feeling than knowing that I am changing a child's life through education.
