Who We Are
10 Books A Home (10BH) is an early education and parent engagement nonprofit founded to raise student achievement in the K-8 Ravenswood School District and build a model for raising student achievement in high-poverty school districts.
Although student achievement can often predict later outcomes (i.e. high school and college graduation rates, health, incarceration rates, etc.), 10BH believes achievement starts in the home with children and their parents during the prekindergarten years.
10BH’s approach aims to ensure children enter kindergarten with many of the skills and behaviors ranked by kindergarten teachers as vital for school-readiness, and parents ready their children for kindergarten and develop strategies to stay actively involved during their children’s grade school years.

The Need
10BH serves families whose children are tracked to attend kindergarten in Ravenswood School District, where:
- 78% of students read below grade level
- 72% of students are below grade level in math
- the high school dropout rate is 70%
- 90% of students are low-income
- 82% of parents have no post high school education
Despite many intervention efforts within the district’s borders, low student achievement has persisted for more than 20 years. 10BH believes achievement is a social condition that starts in the home and collectively involves thousands of homes surrounding the school district.
Before student achievement can markedly improve, families, neighborhoods, and communities must build a bridge between homes and schools to streamline children’s learning experiences.
