We know that about 85% of children enter 10BH 3 months developmentally delayed (81% of children in our community are below grade level in grade school - very interesting connection). By one year in to our program, children out perform their preschool peers in 7 different learning domains. One year laterchildren simultaneously begin kindergarten and graduate 10BH. At the end of kindergarten, 10BH graduates are performing at or above grade level in 12 subject areas (while 81% of their peers are below grade level). Three years after graduating, they are still performing at or above grade level (while 81% of their peers are still below grade level).
Why is 10BH so effective?
Research In Action
10 Books A Home has developed a new learning method, Intrinsic Learning Motivation (ILM). The method’s focus is to support high poverty children in learning about the things they are naturally interested in (called intrinsic learning motivations). 10BH admits children of all abilities, including children with autism, aspergers, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, speech and motor delays.
A volunteer tutor provides learning parties once a week, year round for two years. Each learning party is planned based on what the child enjoyed at the last learning party (and, interests that develop over time) and learning assignments are given at the end of each learning party so the child can continue to enjoy learning between learning parties. This basic process repeats for two years.
To better understand intrinsic learning motivation, 10BH is posting every learning party its Founder, CEO & Chief ILMer, Paul Thiebaut III, has with his two Learners, Danny and Sol. You can watch how intrinsic learning motivation impacts learning and development in two very different children.
Danny (link to learning parties below)
Danny is diagnosed with autism. He started learning with Paul at age three and will graduate from 10BH in 2018.
Sol (link to learning parties below)
Sol also started 10BH at age three and comes from a Spanish-speaking family. She will graduate in 2019.
